The approach to teaching Science is one of inquiry and discovery through phenomena-based investigative experiences. Aligned to state and national standards, the curriculum includes the study of life, physical, earth, space, engineering, and environmental science. A research-based learning cycle is used for instruction. Students engage in hands-on explorations of the phenomena being investigated throughout each unit. Small and whole group discussions, as well as journal writing, are utilized to help students reflect on their discoveries and to construct understanding that is scientifically acceptable, can be shared with others, and finally, applied to new situations. Through this process, students construct an understanding of scientific concepts at a developmentally appropriate pace, develop critical thinking skills, and increase their ability to understand and problem-solve.
Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, the school district will be transitioning to a new curriculum based on the new PA STEELS Standards (Science, Technology & Engineering, Environmental Literacy & Sustainability). More information on these new standards can be found HERE.
