Where Curiosity Begins, And Confidence Grows

At our seven elementary schools, we strive to create environments where students feel known, supported, and inspired to learn. From the first day of kindergarten through fifth grade, we focus on building strong academic foundations while nurturing curiosity, creativity, and a sense of belonging.

Our Approach To Elementary Education

Our elementary learning program is designed to support the whole child academically, socially, and emotionally.

In every classroom, you will see:

  • Engaging, student-centered instruction.
  • A balance of foundational skills and creative exploration.
  • Opportunities for collaboration and problem-solving.
  • A focus on building confidence and independence.

Detailed information regarding our operational procedures and school policies is available in the 2025-2026 Elementary School Handbook.

Assessments & Progress

Assessment results are just one part of your child’s story. We encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher to discuss these reports. Together, we can ensure every student in our neighborhood schools feels confident and empowered to succeed

Assessments

We use a variety of tools to help families understand their students' growth every step of the way. Our teachers use both daily check-ins (formative) and progress snapshots (summative) to guide their instruction. Additionally, we use specific tools to provide a clear picture of student success.

  • MAP (Measures of Academic Progress): For grades K-5, MAP measures individual growth in reading and math over time. MAP is an adaptive test that adjusts to each student’s level.
  • AIMSwebPlus: A quick screening tool for grades K-5, AIMSweb is used three times a year to identify strengths and areas where a student may need some additional support.
  • PSSA (PA System of School Assessment): For students in grades 3-5, the PSSAs are our annual state-wide assessment in English Language Arts, Math, and Science (Grade 4 only).

Understanding Your Student’s Report Card
Our elementary report cards were developed over several years with direct input from our teachers and families. We focus on "Levels of Proficiency" to show exactly where your child is on the road to mastering a skill. Our Frequently Asked Questions document provides quick answers about our grading scales and philosophy.

Leading The Way In Learning

A Support System for Every Learner

Our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) ensures that every student gets exactly what they need, whether it’s extra help in math or an advanced challenge in reading.

Intentional Technology

We use technology as a tool for empowerment. While technology is constantly evolving, our current digital platforms are chosen specifically to reinforce classroom learning while maintaining a healthy balance with screen-free time.

Matt's Maker Space

Every school features a dedicated Maker Space. Starting in 2025, our Librarians and teachers will co-teach monthly themed lessons that integrate science, technology, engineering, and sustainability.

A Thoughtful Transition To Middle School

As students move from elementary to middle school, we take a thoughtful, supportive approach to ensure a smooth transition.

While our elementary schools feed into specific middle schools, we recognize that our unique neighborhood geography sometimes means a student's assigned school isn't the one closest to their front door. To support our families, the District has established specific guidelines for students transitioning from Markham Elementary.
