About

Rooted In Tradition. Focused On Students. Connected To Community.

For more than 100 years, Washington Elementary School has been a cornerstone of Mt. Lebanon since its doors first opened in 1923. With its iconic Greek revival architecture and a century of student success, Washington continues to lead the way, blending timeless tradition with a forward-looking, student-centered environment.

Washington At A Glance

  • Opened in 1923, Washington Elementary is Mt. Lebanon's first purpose-built elementary school.
  • Designed by the architectural firm of Ingham & Boyd in Greek revival style.
  • Originally built with 18 classrooms and a capacity of 500 students.
  • Most recently renovated in January 2006.

A School That Set the Standard

  • When land was purchased in 1919 to build Washington School, the community wasn't just acquiring property; it was creating a path to offer families an education.

  • Completed in 1923 and designed by the celebrated firm of Ingham and Boyd, the building's Greek revival architecture set the tone for every school that followed in the District. The landscape was shaped by architect Tell Nicolette, creating a campus that was as thoughtfully designed on the outside as it was inside.

  • By 1927, Washington had expanded to include grades 7 through 9, with 10th through 12th graders occupying the second floor.

  • The playground between Washington and Mellon Schools even featured a wading pool that transformed into an ice skating rink each winter.
